Short description

description · EN

Beehive.py is a factory game whose controller is a real Python interpreter. The player’s program lives as a file on disk — editable in PyCharm, VS Code or the built-in editor, with hot-reload, autocomplete and real tracebacks. From a first while loop through pathfinding to real concurrency with up to four bees in their own interpreters, everything the game teaches is Python you keep. The production chain culminates in the Great Hive — and if you want, you win the whole game without a single click, through a fully automated speedrun.

The story behind it

A mathematician and a banker building a Steam game after hours. Beehive.py started with one question: why does learning to code feel like a textbook, when automation is the most satisfying thing a game can be? No publisher, no budget, no deadline — quality over timeline.

  • Two people, after work. Remote collaboration between Roßdorf and Bottrop, Germany.
  • A real tech story. Actual Python (Pyodide) in a Web Worker, real concurrency across multiple interpreters, and fully procedural sound — not a single audio asset in the whole game.
  • The game punishes hardcoding by design. Hardcode your move counts and you strand the bee; learn breadth-first search and you win.
