Collatz Labs

Simple rules. Surprising results.

A two-person build lab from Roßdorf, Germany. We make software, hardware, and the things in between — starting with a game that teaches you to code for real.

why we’re called Collatz

Take any number. Follow two rules. Where do you end up?

The Collatz conjecture is one of the simplest open questions in mathematics. Take a number. If it’s even, halve it. If it’s odd, triple it and add one. Repeat.

even  n / 2 odd  3n + 1

Do you always reach 1? Since 1937, nobody has been able to prove it. Two rules — one unsolved problem.

That’s the whole idea behind us. Give something simple a set of honest rules, and watch what grows. It’s how good math works. It’s how good code works. It’s how we build.

not tied to a single project

One lab, many builds.

We started with a game, but Collatz Labs isn’t a one-game studio. The craft is the same whether it runs on a screen or sits on a desk.

Games & software

Interactive things with real depth. Our first is Beehive.py, a factory game you play by writing actual Python.

Hardware & systems

We build and configure machines, too — the physical side of the same craft, from parts to a running system.

Whatever’s next

New projects join the lab whenever the idea is good enough. The name is a promise: simple rules, room to grow.

The lab’s first release.

Beehive.py turns learning to code into a factory game. You write real Python to command a swarm of bees, automate a growing factory, and build the Great Hive — and every line you write is a skill you keep.

Beehive.py

Learn real Python by playing.

Write actual code — not blocks, not pseudocode. From your first while loop to real concurrency across four interpreters.

the two of us

A mathematician and a banker, after hours.

Collatz Labs is Johannes and Tristan — one deep in mathematics, one in finance — building after work between Roßdorf and Bottrop. No publisher, no budget, no deadline. We make the things we’d want to use, and we don’t ship them until they’re good.
